Since 1991, the Union Plus Scholarship Program has awarded more than $4.5 million to students of working families who want to begin or continue their post-secondary education—over 3,000 families have benefited so far. One such student is Selma Gezlev, daughter of two union members—her father is a Bricklayers (BAC) member and her mother an AFT member. She started college this past fall at Hofstra University, where she hopes to major in civil engineering. The home of Selma’s family was destroyed in Hurricane Sandy. She says, “Our union leaders came through for us and have become like family. Being a union member is about job security and protection, but for us, it is so much more than that. It is about having a bond that connects us forever.” Scholarship amounts range from $500 to $4,000 and are for study beginning in fall 2020. Current and retired union members, as well as their spouses and dependent children, are eligible to apply. The 2020 application is due Jan. 31.
